Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, and its properties depend on the proportion of these metals. The most commonly used brass alloys in plumbing fittings are CW617 brass and 58-3 brass.

CW617

CW617 brass, also known as CW614N brass, is a lead-free brass alloy that contains 57-60% copper, 2.4-3.7% lead, and 0.5-1.9% iron. It's commonly used in due to its excellent corrosion resistance, high ductility, and low dezincification resistance (DZR). DZR is essential in fittings as it prevents the loss of zinc from the brass, which can lead to corrosion and eventual failure of the fittings.

58-3

58-3 brass, also known as C27400 brass, is also a lead-free brass alloy that contains 63-68% copper, 0.07-0.12% lead, and 0.03-0.06% iron. It's commonly used in fittings due to its good corrosion resistance, high strength, and excellent brazing properties. This alloy is well-suited for applications where high strength and leak-tightness are critical.

The main difference between CW617 brass and 58-3 brass is their copper content. 58-3 brass has a higher copper content and lower lead content, making it stronger and more robust. However, it may be more challenging to work with than CW617 brass due to its higher melting point.
