What Is PEX Pipe?

PEX piping is made from long strands of polyethylene (PE) plastic extruded into hollow tubes or sheets. These tubes are cut into smaller lengths and joined together using special tools to form fittings. The fittings are connected to one another using crimp rings or compression fittings, which allow for a tight seal between the two ends of the fitting.
There are two main reasons why PEX piping comes in different colors. The first is to make the pipes easier to identify and follow. The second is that you can use different colors to determine the tempture of the water flowing through the pipes.

PEX (cross-linked polyethylene) pipe is typically made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and is cross-linked using one of sevl methods, including peroxide, silane, or electron beam. The cross-linking process creates a stronger and more flexible pipe that is resistant to heat and chemical degradation. The PEX pipe material is approved by many organizations, including the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF), the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), and the Underwriters Laboratories (UL).

Uses for PEX piping

 

Plumbers use PEX pipings for both hot and cold potable water. Because PEX piping is flexible, it doesn’t need to be installed using traditional branch piping techniques that require more connections; rather, it can be installed to a central manifold with pipes going directly to the fixtures (called “home runs”). These runs go from the central manifold directly to the fixture, with no fittings or connections. This reduces the number of possible leaks and shortens the installation process. PEX can also be used with traditional branch piping techniques that require more connections.

PEX piping is also used in radiant heat flooring. In this heating system, builders install flexible PEX piping in a zigzag serpentine coil throughout the floor area, and then pour cement over it. Hot water circulates through the PEX pipes in the floor, providing radiant heat to the room.

How to Connect PEX Pipes

There are sevl ways to connect PEX pipes, with push-fit being the easiest.

Crimp

This method is one of the most common ways to connect PEX pipes. With this connection method, copper or brass rings enclose the end of two pipes to connect them and you’ll use a special PEX crimping tool to secure each one into place.

Expansion

You’ll need a special PEX expander tool (essentially a heat gun) to use this expansion method to connect PEX pipes. Use the tool to heat and stretch the diameter of the tube, then insert the end of a fitting. As it cools, the tube will contract and shrink to its original size to create a seal around the fitting.

Push-fit

This is the easiest (and quickest) way to connect PEX pipes, so it's a popular practice among DIYers. While you won’t need to purchase tools, you’ll want to ensure you get push-fit specified PEX pipes in order for this to work. Push the PEX into a fitting by hand and the small teeth on the inside of the fitting will hold it into place.

Stainless steel clamps

Like with the crimp method, the stainless steel clamp method involves tightening rings around connections. You'll slip a stainless steel ring over the PEX tube, insert a fitting, then use a ratchet clamping tool to squeeze a tab on the ring and tighten everything together.

Compression fittings

This type of connection involves inserting a hollow brass compression tube into the end of the PEX pipe. Then, a compression ring is placed over the pipe and a threaded brass nut is placed on the end. Tightening the brass nut forces the ring and pipe against the brass tube insert to create a seal.

 

 
How To Install PEX Pipes?
 

 

Prepare your materials
  • First, prepare all the things and tools you need:
  • Crimp Rings

  • Crimping Tool
  • Pipe Cutter
  • Marker

Slide a crimp ring onto the pipe.

Start by sliding a crimp ring over the end of PEX pipes. Position the crimp rings at least 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch from the end of the pipes. Tighten them with the crimping tool.

Slide a fitting into the pipe.

Fittings connect PEX pipes to a water source and other fixtures. Slide one into the pipes, and make sure that you use the correct fitting to avoid leaks and other issues.

Run the PEX pipes from the water source to the fixtures.

The last thing to do is to run the pipes from the water source to the fixtures. Provide support every 32 inches for horizontal pipes.
After running and connecting them, turn on the water source to test and check for leaks and other issues.

 

Which PEX Tubing To Choose?

 

PEX-A is the most flexible of all PEX pipe types, it has little or no coil memory and gives installer the ability to repair kinks with a heat gun. It has been in use for over long-term durability according to standards which is longer than other types and a lower bending radius in PEX-A (6 times the OD vs. 8 times the OD for PEX-B & C) is helpful.

PEX-B is a clear winner in terms of price compared with both other types. It has been in use for over 40 years and it also has a higher bursting pressure than PEX-A and a similar or better resistance to oxidation.

All PEX types are vulnble to high chlorine counts and can degrade and become brittle if exposed to high levels of the chemical and exposure to UV light. PEX has an external coating of antioxidant to protect it from UV light which must pass 50-year testing.

The major downside of PEX-B is its’ stiffness and coil memory. While there’s little difference in smaller sizes such as 1/2”, larger pipe diameters, especially 1”, can be noticeably harder to bend. Any kinks made during the installation can only be repaired by installing a coupling and cannot be repaired with a heat gun like PEX-A.

PEX A has a requirement for the degree of cross linking to be greater than 70% and PEX B the requirement is greater than 65%. The chemical structure of PEX A has a lower crystallinity due to the manufacturing method and has a lower density and strength hence PEX A needs to have a higher degree of cross linking.

PEX A is more flexible than PEX B but both types must be manufactured to a minimum bending radius.So, at the end of the day both PEX A and B must meet the same minimum performance requirements.PEX-C is the hardest to evaluate, given the lack of testing data and publicly available information.

 

 
Four Tips to Prevent Common PEX Tubing Problems
 

 

 
Only install PEX when temptures are above freezing to avoid leaks.

While PEX tubing withstands cold temptures better than other types of pipes, the tempture must be above freezing while it's being installed. Installing PEX tubing during below-freezing temptures will lead to faulty connections that will leak and need to be replaced. If you must install PEX in cold weather, it's important to warm the ends of the pipe before making any connections. Try heating the ends of the pipe with a heat gun until they are slightly warm to the touch, and then quickly use the crimping tool to create the connection. Never heat the pipe above 200 degrees Fahrenheit prior to making any connections.

 
Use suspension clips to protect PEX pipes from friction damage.

Like other pipes, PEX tubing expands and contracts in response to tempture changes. Over time, these small movements can wear away the outer surface of the pipe and create leaks. To stop this problem before it occurs, use plastic suspension clips to cover the pipe where it passes through holes in metal or wood studs. You can also use foam pipe insulation to protect PEX tubing that runs parallel to a stud or joist.

 
Install nail protection plates to prevent accidental PEX pipe punctures.

If your PEX pipe is less than 1 ½ inches from the edge of a joist or stud, you must install nail protection plates along the face of the structural members. Nail protection plates, also called nail stoppers, are rectangular pieces of metal that are attached to the face of a joist or stud. When a structural member is covered with plywood or drywall, the nail stopper prevents any screws or nails from accidentally piercing the pipe within the wall.

 
Use bend supports to prevent kinks when making tight turns.

Most kinks in PEX tubing occur when an inexperienced plumber tries to make a tight turn. While kinks in PEX tubing can be repaired, you can avoid this common problem by using a elbow to create any 90 degree angles. Both metal and plastic elbows are available, and they attach to the PEX pipe using the same connection method used to attach the pipe to a fixture.
